Adelaide
Hello and welcome to Workshop Wednesday.

Zane
The old WW here again.

Adelaide
Excellent. So today we are talking a little bit about how to get our staff involved.
I mean with this health and safety, dare I say, nonsense, some staff may think.

Zane
Some of the nonsense, the BS, the stuff that we have to do instead of doing our job.

Adelaide
Exactly. So how do I get their mindset to change and get them excited?

Zane
Well I think the first thing you can do is, there are kind of three things, I reckon you know. I say watch your mouth, create a way for them to talk to you, and then watch how you react when they actually tell you about stuff.

Adelaide
So, start with that watch your mouth. What do you mean by that?

Zane
Well, unfortunately some people and some bosses have a real potty mouth when it comes to health and safety, frankly. And what it is, is they say ridiculous things. "Oh, I can't do that because of bloody health and safety, and the health safety police" and all this kind of stuff. You go, well hang on. What are we talking about here?

It's like we're talking about this thing, this health and safety that happens over in this corner.
In the right corner is health and safety. In the left corner is the work getting done. Well, no. It's actually the work gets done safely. Health and safety is not some dude in the blimmin' cafeteria that writes these policies. Safety is about doing work safely.

So if you're always talking negatively about health and safety, then it's going to be extremely hard, no matter what you do, to get your team involved.

Adelaide
No, I agree. So now hit me with getting them involved.

Zane
Well, so you need to create ways for them to talk to you, right? So PeopleSafe's quite cool because it's got a really neat way called Tell Your Story that allows staff to give you feedback and all that kind of thing.

But you need to create ways, or just a way, for them to talk to you about it. Whether it's a monthly meeting, whether it's you do-- you might have seen on the website the idea of a hazard hunt, ways for you to go out and look at the work, and talk to each other about it. Find out when stuff's going good. Point out when stuff's going really, really badly.

So that you can actually go, hey, what can we do to actually make this safe? If there's no way for you to talk about it, then it's going to be pretty hard to get them involved, huh?

Adelaide
True, very true.

Zane
I know it's rocket science. I've got a degree in rocket science, so.

Adelaide
Excellent. So we've got them involved, and we hear things that we don't quite like.

Zane
So this is kind of that third thing that I talked about. It's watch your responses when you get feedback on these things because often staff will come and genuinely want to tell you something, saying hey, this is a problem.

And if the response is harden up, take a concrete pill, you tell them don't be so precious then it's going to be pretty unlikely that they're going to tell you something again, right? So, respond, we always hey, that's awesome. How the hang are we going to make that safe?

What can we do? Because often it will be someone coming and maybe complaining about something small. But if you always get rid of them and tell them to what's-her-name off, then they're not going to tell you about the big things there because your attitude is that you don't really care.

Adelaide
So we're watching our mouth, we're getting them involved, and responding well to things
that we might not like, or we do like.

Zane
That's right.

Adelaide
It sounds pretty good.

Zane
Well, I thought so.

Adelaide
Excellent. Well, thank you for that.

Zane
So that's another Workshop Wednesday done and dusted, is it?

Adelaide
Dusted.

Zane
Simple great tips, aren't they, these Workshop Wednesdays?

Adelaide
Fabulous.

Zane
They're fantastic. And we'll see you next time.
